Award-winning author Audrey Penn will present her new series of Blackbeard mysteries at this workshop as part of the community reading program Bookmarked! Presented with Cameron Village Regional Library and the Lucy Daniels Center.

Exhibit Opening: Al Norte al Norte: Latino Life in North Carolina

Get a special look at the work of Pulitzer Prize–winning photographer José Galvez, who documents the work, worship, family connections, and celebrations of the state’s Latino community. Sponsored by the North Carolina Museum of History Associates and the Consulate General of Mexico in Raleigh. Exhibit made possible through the generous support of the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation and the North Carolina Humanities Council.

¿Qué es Cinco de Mayo?
Saturday, May 5
1–1:45 p.m. Lecture in Spanish

More than a fiesta, Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican militia’s victory over the French army in 1862. Examine the history of the holiday and how it is celebrated today. Sponsored by the Consulate General of Mexico in Raleigh.

War Zone — World War II Off the North Carolina Coast
Sunday, May 6

Kevin Duffus, Author

This program marks the first time Duffus presents his hot-off-the-press bookWar Zone — World War II Off the North Carolina Coast. The author will reveal surprising information about “one of the most spellbinding but least-known, least-appreciated chapters of American history.” War Zone tells gripping stories from the perspectives of everyday people who lived on the coast of North Carolina in 1942, when the United States suffered, but overcame, the German U-boat menace that inflicted one of the nation’s worst defeats of World War II.  

Be one of the first to purchase War Zone. Copies are available in the Museum Shop for $24.95. A book signing and light refreshments follow the program. Seating is limited, so arrive early!

Margaret Bauer, Professor of Southern Literature, East Carolina University

Creator of The Lost Colony, Paul Green was the first southern playwright to gain national recognition. Bauer will offer insight into the life and work of North Carolina’s leading dramatist.

Music of the Carolinas: Laura Boosinger

Laura Boosinger's concert performances and recordings have earned for her a well-deserved reputation as one of North Carolina's most talented singers and interpreters of the music of the southern region.

Presented with PineCone, with support from the N.C. Museum of History Associates, Williams Mullen, and WLHC-FM/WLQC-FM.

Note: The Music of the Carolinas series has attracted overflow crowds this season. Beginning in April, the museum will issue free tickets to each performance on a first-come, first-served basis the day of the show. Tickets will be available at the table outside the auditorium at 2 p.m. (doors open at 2:45 p.m.) and will be issued to the first 315 people to arrive. Per fire marshal regulations, tickets must be presented before entering the auditorium. Thank you for your understanding and for your support of the Music of the Carolinas series!

Curator’s Choice Tour: Robson House

Conservator Paige Myers will take a close-up look at clothing and textiles from the late colonial and federal periods in The Story of North Carolina and discuss the challenges of preparing textiles for display.

Associates Annual Meeting and Reception

Plan to attend the Associates Annual Meeting at the museum. The business meeting in Daniels Auditorium will be followed by a talk by writer Sharyn McCrumb on her novel The Ballad of Tom Dooley and a book signing. A reception honoring members of the state legislature will begin at 5:30 p.m. Open to all Associates members.
