A Time to Plant, A Time to Pluck

Outdoor seasonal exhibit in conjunction with Friends of Mountain History/Museums in Partnership's 2009 themed program, "A Long Row to Hoe."  Museum staff and volunteers will plant and tend a vegetable garden "the old-time way" (plowed by  horses, planted "by the signs" using heirloom seeds when possible, fertilized naturally, and organically pest controlled. 

Public programs will be held throughout the growing season to demonstrate the techniques and methods employed by farmers in the 19th and 20th centuries. At harvest time, programs will include demonstrations on early food preservation methods such as drying and canning.

Wellsprings of Life

Indoor exhibit on early water systems and methods of locating water. Learn about dowsing, divining, old pumping and piping systems, wells, and more.

The Carolina Mountains: Photography of Margaret Morley

Photographs capturing scenes of daily life in western North Carolina during the turn of the twentieth century.

This exhibit is placed in four locations in Old Fort, all within a short walk: Mountain Gateway Museum, Pinwilz Art Gallery, Old Fort Library, and Old Fort Depot and Railroad Museum.
