Pirates, Ships, and Lighthouses

Set sail for adventure on the coast! Learn about fierce pirates like Blackbeard and Anne Bonney, build a lighthouse, wear pirate’s clothing, taste sea rations, and listen to seafaring stories.
Moccasins to Rocket Ships

Explore how transportation has changed in North Carolina over the years. Travel by foot, animal, boat, train, motorcar, and spaceship. End your journey with a field trip!
History Heroes

North Carolina has been home to many famous and infamous characters, from inventors and noblemen to pirates and spies. Learn about the people who have made history in the Tar Heel State.
Mountain Life
July 9–13 1–4:30 p.m.
Who are the people and what are the traditions of North Carolina’s Mountain communities? Learn a Scottish dance, play a Cherokee game, make an apple tart, and listen to a Jack tale.
Through the Seasons

In the past, as today, the lives and activities of North Carolinians revolved around the seasons. Design a springtime hat, make a kite, churn butter, create a snow globe, and celebrate all the holidays of the year in one week!

Colonial North Carolina

Get a taste of what life was like on the eve of the American Revolution. Listen to stories, play period games, learn a trade, and look at period clothing.
They Got Game

When did March madness begin? What does rounders have to do with baseball? Find out about early versions of your favorite team sports, compare the equipment, and learn to play the games.
Farm to Factory NEW!

Would you rather work on a farm or in a factory? Discover why, when, and how many North Carolinians made the shift from agriculture to industry. Visit a farm, play mill village games, and learn about how technology is used both on farms and in factories today.
American Indian Life FULL

More American Indians live in North Carolina than in any other state east of the Mississippi River. Find out about past and present tribes, make a coil pot, design your own beadwork pattern, and listen to stories from our state’s first people.

The Fabulous 1950s NEW!

What do capitalism, communism, and the Cold War have in common? How about copy machines, Corvettes, plastic Coke bottles, and Johnny Cash? Or McDonalds, Martin Luther King Jr., and Marilyn Monroe? The 1950s, of course! Find out about these and other people, places, and things that made the ’50s fabulous.
