Black History Month at the Museum of History

February is Black History Month, and the place to celebrate is the N.C. Museum of History in Raleigh. In fact, the museum will kick off Black History Month early with two special events in January. February will bring blues musician Boo Hanks, African American History Tours, and children’s programs. 

Admission is free unless otherwise noted.Parking is free on weekends.

Roots to Rap: A Musical Conversation
Friday, Jan. 27
7-9 p.m.
$11 in advance, $15 at the door

Hear a discussion led by Pierce Freelon, university professor and founder of Blackademics.org, about North Carolina’s musical roots and influence on hip-hop and rap culture. The program includes special performances by local artist The Beast and others. The Durham-based quartet fearlessly navigates worlds of hip-hop and jazz with compelling lyrics and progressive compositions.

Enjoy a day of activities, crafts, music, entertainment, and foods in celebration of the state’s African American heritage and culture. Over 75 musicians, storytellers, dancers, historians, playwrights, authors, artists, re-enactors, chefs, teachers, scholars and other presenters will share their culture and heritage.

In honor of the festival’s 11th year, this year’s event highlights North Carolina’s 11 historically black colleges and universities — the largest number of any state in the nation.

The African American Cultural Celebration is sponsored Wells Fargo, with additional support provided by the N.C. African American Heritage Commission, the N.C. Museum of History Associates, and the United Arts Council of Raleigh and Wake County, with funds from the United Arts campaign as well as the N.C. Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts, which believes a great nation deserves great art.

Educator Charlotte Hawkins Brown taught not only the basics — reading, writing and arithmetic—but also polite behavior. Learn how knowing the proper etiquette benefited her students. This program is presented with Cameron Village Regional Library.

Explore the lives and accomplishments of African American North Carolinians from the antebellum period to the Civil Rights era.

Nearly 10 years before the Montgomery bus boycott, black workers in eastern North Carolina campaigned for civil rights in tobacco warehouses. Discover how thousands organized and secured union contracts in nearly 30 “leaf houses.”

Music of the Carolinas: Boo Hanks
Sunday, Feb. 12
3-4 p.m.

Drawing from a deep musical well, Hanks showcases his virtuosity in the delicate finger-style guitar of classic Piedmont blues. The performance is presented with PineCone, with support from the N.C. Museum of History Associates, Williams Mullen, and WLHC-FM/WLQC-FM.

The museum is located at 5 E. Edenton Street, across from the State Capitol. Parking is available in the lot across Wilmington Street. Hours are Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, noon to 5 p.m. The Museum of History, within the Division of State History Museums, is part of the N.C.
