Scouting: 100 Years of Adventure

The new exhibit Scouting: 100 Years of Adventureat the N.C. Museum of History in Raleigh commemorates the centennial anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America. Since 1910 more than 100 million people have experienced the excitement and benefits of this organization. The small exhibit, developed by the Occoneechee Council based in Raleigh, offers a glimpse of the Boy Scouts’ past and brings it to the present. Admission is free.

Visitors will see items ranging from a 1910 Boy Scout uniform and handbook to numerous award-winning pinewood derby cars made by current members. The exhibit explores several of Scouting’s more popular elements and themes, including high adventure, the Order of the Arrow, pinewood derbies, duty to God and country, volunteerism, uniforms, and notable Eagle Scouts.

“We want this exhibit to stir up fond memories for former Scouts and inspire dreams of adventure for future Scouts,” says Seth Asbill, District Executive, Occoneechee Council, Boy Scouts of America. “Celebrating our past is a vital part of our preparation for the future. This engaging exhibit shares elements of Scouting’s rich history, and we hope that others will discover all this great organization has to offer.”

Other exhibit items from past decades include an official Boy Scout cook kit, patches, pocketknives and canteens. Among the photographs is a 1913 image of the first Boy Scout troop in Raleigh. Nearby is the 1926 charter establishing Durham’s first troop.

Video components in Scouting show contrasting footage of local summer camp activities in the 1940s and modern Scouts taking advantage of abundant opportunities, whether it’s rock climbing, snorkeling, sailing or volunteering in the community. The exhibit also features an interactive knot-tying station.

Scouting will remain open throughout the summer. The N.C. Museum of History is located at 5 E. Edenton St., across from the State Capitol.
