Home / Tar Heel Junior Historian Association / Organizing a New Club
Suggested steps for organizing a club:
- Generate interest in forming a club.
Promote the club by placing a notice in the school newspaper, making a public service announcement, or sending invitations to students. Call THJHA for a free promotional video available to all club sponsors.
- Schedule a meeting of interested students and discuss the club's goals.
Show the THJHA video. Brainstorm possible history projects you can do as a club. Select a club name. Decide on the time and frequency of meetings: during class hours, during activity periods, after school, or on weekends.
- Consider adopting an organizational structure and electing officers.
Discuss the need for a constitution, bylaws, or special committees. Submit your application for membership to the THJHA office (very important step). See How to Join.
- Select activities for the year.
Place an emphasis on local history: invite county residents to speak at club meetings; plan short trips to historical points of interest; volunteer to help community civic groups with historical or preservation projects; plan a crafts festival or history fair. Plans should include entering projects into statewide competition and attending the THJHA Annual Convention in the spring.
