Teacher Tips for Attending the American Indian Heritage Education Day
- Allow plenty of time to arrive. Groups of students will be arriving every 30 minutes beginning at 9:00 a.m. Please be considerate of volunteers, presenters and other groups by arriving on time. Bus parking is available on Blue Ridge Road and visitor parking ($1.00/hour) is available in the lot directly behind the museum, which can be accessed from Jones Street or Edenton Street.
- Be sure to register and pay for your group upon arrival. Please have your payment and confirmation information ready. Checks should be made out to Education Program Funds. A table will be outside the auditorium in the museum lobby. All groups will begin with an orientation session in the auditorium. Additional curriculum materials and evaluations can be picked up at the registration table.
- Please have your group prepared to split into smaller groups (about 10-12), each with an adult. After orientation, smaller groups can visit the various stations.
- Not every group will necessarily have time to visit every station. Due to the amount of presentations and limited time of visiting groups, please inform your students and chaperones ahead of time that they may visit as many different stations as their time allows; however, they probably won’t have time to visit all the stations. We encourage teachers to schedule student teaching time following their visit, allowing students to teach each other about what they learned.
- What about visiting the Lost Colony exhibit? There is no additional charge to visit this special exhibit; however, tickets are timed and advance registration is necessary. Please contact Capital Area Visitor Services at 919-807-7950 or toll-free at 866-724-8687 to reserve tickets.
- Want more? Encourage students to come back! The museum’s FREE 12th annual American Indian Heritage Celebration is Saturday, November 17 from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Check out the museum’s Web site for a schedule of events.
- Still have questions? If you have further questions or concerns about the program, please contact Emily Grant, Youth Programs Coordinator, at 919-807-7979 or emily.grant@ncmail.net.
- Have fun and enjoy the day!
Thanks for coming.
