The Last Campaigns, 1865

By the beginning of 1865, few Confederate soldiers and civilians still believed that they could win the war. All across the South, defeat became an increasing reality, despite four years of hard fighting. The Confederate army in Virginia seemed hopelessly deadlocked in trench warfare, while the Federal army under the command of General William T. Sherman advanced from Georgia toward the Carolinas.
