The Trailblazers had a wonderful field trip to the NC Museum of History in Raleigh on October 30th. Since we studied about the Lost Colony at September’s club meeting, it was exciting to see John White’s actual watercolor paintings from the 1500’s. The paintings depicted the “New World's" geography, natural history, and Algonquian-speaking people. There was also a reproduction of an Indian Village, using props from the set of "The Lost Colony" outdoor drama. We also saw costumes from the drama, as well as some interactive computer programs highlighting related topics in history.
We also had the opportunity to view the WWII, NC Sports Hall of Fame, and the THJH exhibits. We were able to see our winning group art project from last year as well as individual project winners. They have a whole new exhibit hall for the Junior Historians and it was neat to see all the projects. It was an inspiration for our new members to decide what they might like to do for this year's competition.
After touring the museum, we enjoyed a picnic lunch on the grounds of the Mordecai Historic Park, an antebellum plantation house built before the United States was even a country! The younger children were invited into the chapel where they signed a marriage certificate with a quill pen. Entering the lawyer's office we got to see how they sealed their documents with wax and an eagle stamp. The older children learned much about the everyday life in the 1800’s and how differently that lifestyle was from our own today. They also learned how modern inventions made their way to the Mordecai house which started out with no running water or electricity. The park also includes the structure believed to be the birthplace of Andrew Johnson, the 17th president of the United States. These were both wonderful places to visit and everyone had a great time!
