Chapter of the Year
The THJHA Adviser Handbook states, “The purpose of the Tar Heel Junior Historian Association is to encourage the study of local and state history and to help young people better understand and appreciate their place in history.” This year’s Chapter of the Year award goes to a club that is not only working to educate members about their state and local history, but also inspiring adults in the community through its commitment to preserving local history. Located in New Bern, our state’s first capital, this club has taken the opportunity to visit the many historic sites there. But club members have been most involved with the abandoned and nearly forgotten Bryan-Fordham Cemetery. They are now working with the New Bern Preservation Foundation and the New Bern 300th Anniversary Committee to raise awareness and funds for the cemetery’s restoration. The Tar Heel Junior Historian Association applauds this club for doing a great job is representing what THJHA is all about! The 2008 Chapter of the Year is Pepsi Cola Kids Club, The Epiphany School, New Bern, Cille Griffith, adviser.
