Summer Camps 2008

Please note: All camps (with the exception of History Training Shop) are now full. To be put on a waiting list, please contact the camp registrar at 919-807-7982.

Have a blast in the past! The North Carolina Museum of History offers children fun hands-on experiences about life in other times. Enrollment is limited, so register early!

Registration begins February 15 for members of the North Carolina Museum of History Associates and March 3 for the general public. Need-based scholarships are available.

Every day brings a new adventure to summer campers at the North Carolina Museum of History. But whether it’s about pirates in the 1700s, children in the 1890s, or soldiers in World War II, campers agree it’s all about having fun!

Camps are taught by professional educators on staff or experienced teachers in the community. Enrollment is limited to twelve participants per camp.

Coastal Life FULL
Completed grades K–2

What do crab pots, shad boats, and chanteymen have in common? The sea, of course! Find out what makes our coast so special as you journey to the beach without ever leaving Raleigh.

History Heroes FULL
Completed grades K–2

Who were the people making history in North Carolina? Learn about North Carolina’s famous and infamous characters, from pirates and spies to inventors and noblemen.

On the Home Front FULL
Completed grades 3–5
July 7–11
8:30 a.m.–noon

What was it like to live during World War II? Listen to wartime and swing music; taste Victory cooking; find out what soldiers wore, ate, and carried; write a V-mail letter; and shop with ration cards and red points.

Colonial North Carolina FULL

Get a taste of what life was like on the eve of the American Revolution. Listen to stories, play period games, learn a trade, and look at period clothing.

Set sail for adventure on the coast! Learn about fierce pirates like Blackbeard and Anne Bonney, build a lighthouse, wear pirate’s clothing, taste sea rations, and listen to seafaring stories.

Moccasins to Rocket Ships FULL

Explore how transportation has changed in North Carolina over the years. Travel by foot, animal, boat, train, motorcar, and spaceship. End your journey with a field trip to the train station!

The Blue and the Gray FULL

Examine how the Civil War affected life in North Carolina. Debate the issues that carried the state into the war; learn about the daily life of soldiers and the hardships of families at home; and uncover stories of the state's outlaws and heroes.

History Training Shop

Go behind the scenes at the museum. Learn how to present a Gallery Cart and help plan and carry out a public program. You’ll earn a certificate as a junior volunteer for the upcoming year!

American Indian Life FULL

More American Indians live in North Carolina than in any state east of the Mississippi. Find out about past and present tribes, make a coil pot, design your own beadwork pattern, and listen to stories from our state’s first people.

Mountain Life FULL

Who are the people and what are the traditions of North Carolina’s Mountain communities? Learn a Scottish dance, play a Cherokee game, make an apple tart, and listen to a Jack tale.

Toys and Games FULL

What did people do before television, videos, and Nintendo? Find out by spending a week making toys, playing games, and having old-fashioned fun.

A Taste of the Past FULL

Everybody loves to eat! Learn about past and present kitchen customs, tools, foods, and recipes as you eat your way through history.

A completed registration form and a check for payment are necessary to register for camps.
