North Carolina Musuem of History Seeks Volunteers for Colonial LIfe Discovery Room
The N.C. Museum of History in Raleigh is seeking volunteers for its Colonial North Carolina Discovery Room. Designed for elementary-age children, the room features interactive activities about life in backcountry North Carolina during the 18th century. Volunteers are needed to lead groups through the Discovery Room, which was developed to complement the traveling exhibition Discover the Real George Washington: New Views From Mount Vernon. Many elementary school groups and families with children will visit the Discovery Room throughout the exhibition run from Sept. 10, 2010, through Jan. 21, 2011.
Children will enjoy a variety of learning stations that highlight 18th-century clothing, household items, toys, and daily chores. The museum is recruiting volunteers to staff the Discovery Room on Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. The Discovery Room will close Jan. 21, 2011.
You are invited to an orientation and interview session at the Museum of History on one of two evenings: Wednesday, Sept. 1, at 6:30 p.m. or Thursday, Sept. 2, at 6:30 p.m. If you would like to attend, please contact Volunteer Coordinator Debra Nichols in advance to set up an interview time. She can be reached at debra.nichols@ncdcr.gov or 919-807-7986.
If accepted for training, you will need to attend two evening training sessions on Tuesday, Sept. 7, at 6:30 p.m. and Thursday, Sept. 9 at 6:30 p.m. Free parking is available after 5 p.m. in the Jones/Edenton Street lot.
We hope you will consider this exciting opportunity to assist with this major exhibition. Discover the Real George Washington is organized by the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association and funded by the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation. Local sponsorship is provided by NewsRadio 680 WPTF. Additional sponsors are the Museum of History Associates, The News & Observer, Northwestern Mutual, Mr. and Mrs. Everette C. Sherrill, and Triangle Business Journal.
