Off We Go, by Chancy Kapp
That’s the only word I can come up with to describe the first moments of our trip today. On Hallowe’en afternoon, several Benefactors of the NC Museum of History Associates gathered at RDU Airport to begin our trip to France. The purpose of our trip is to commemorate the centennial of the end of World War I, coming up on November 11. The inspiration is the spectacular North Carolina & World War I exhibit at the museum.
We chatted at the gate, ready to head to Atlanta and then on to Paris. Then we noticed an honor guard marching to the gate. The unit snapped to attention as Delta Airlines staff announced that we were traveling with the remains of a young Marine making his final journey home to Georgia.
In silence we stood as a grieving family member, a young uniformed Marine escort and a phalanx of USO volunteers filed by.
We travel to remember the end of The Great War and the hope for peace that the Armistice brought. We traveled with a reminder that those who serve do so at great risk. Semper Fi.
