Presenter: Grant S. Quertermous, Curator and Director of Collections, Classical American Homes Preservation Trust
Millford, located near Pinewood, South Carolina, was built between 1839 and 1841. Its six massive, fluted Corinthian columns, 16-foot interior ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows, domed rotunda, and spectacular circular staircase demonstrate all the features that are inherent in Greek Revival architecture. In fact, Millford is considered by many to be the finest example of Greek Revival residential architecture in America.
Classical American Homes Preservation Trust owns, protects, and operates Ayr Mount (featured in a November 2020 History and Highballs program)—a Federal-style plantation house built in 1815 near Hillsborough that was considered one of the finest residential structures of the Piedmont—and other historic houses in New York and South Carolina.
