Tar Heel Junior Historian Association Annual Convention and Contests

Tar Heel Junior Historians in the North Carolina Museum of History lobby

Each spring the North Carolina Museum of History hosts the THJHA Annual Convention. Hundreds of junior historians from across the state gather for a fun, interesting, and educational day of hands-on workshops and activities. The day also includes the announcement of the winners of THJHA Annual Contests and Awards.

Junior historians can participate in THJHA Annual Contests that include Artifact Search; Christopher Crittenden State History Quiz; Creative Writing; Exhibit & Visual Arts; THJH Magazine Article (two prompts); NC Historic Architecture Photography; and Video Documentary. Additional awards offered include Adviser of the Year; Chapter of the Year; Rookie Chapter of the Year; African American History; American Indian History; Genealogy; History in Action; Sports History; and Women’s History. Winners are showcased in the History in Every Direction: Tar Heel Junior Historian Discovery Gallery exhibit on the 3rd floor at the museum.

Register for Convention!

We are looking forward to the virtual Annual Convention on Friday, April 29. This year, in our magazines, we celebrated North Carolina resiliency, and we took readers behind the scenes at the museum. The Convention is our chance to tie it all together with some interactive and hands-on workshops! We’ll also take the opportunity to recognize junior historians for their work on projects for our Annual Contests. Once again, you’ll be able to join the fun from the comfort of your classroom—no buses or permission slips needed.
