John Stringer Letter

The cursive text, written on aged paper with visible vertical fold lines, discusses the "growing Weight of oppression" and mentions the formation of a company of about 500 men.

To Mr — &C

I made bold at this time to acquaint you of the disagreeable News abounding in our County by a rumor of faction arising by reason of the growing Weight of oppression, which we lye under at this time and have done for a time past, & considering our Liberty which we were almost deprived of by our leading Men and were forced to form ourselves in to a Company of about 500 Men in order to withstand such our oppressors and I thought it proper to write to you as I am informed your County is in the same opposition desiring.

If you pleased to send me word by Letter as quick as possible the manner of your proceedings, and if in case your foes should Assault you and should be in need of help, send me word and we will, Night or Day, be ready at your Assistance. We are informed Mr. fanning has raised the Militia to oppose you and he has had 3 of you in Goal which the Militia was in order to gaurd the Goal. Pray encourage your Men to hold their Integrity & rectify Matters which have so long been dark to us by the stupidity of our County [&?] being ignorantly guided by such illetorate ignorant Magistrates as we have at our Court giving sundry sums to our Gentlemen and then levying it on the County. This and much more is the Nature of the present Disturbance, which before we quit, we hope times will be better.

Please to send me a Letter as quick as possible & direct to Jn Stringer living on Cheeks Creek near Caleb Touchstones. Now I have no more to add at present but desire to be Esteemed your faithful & True Assistant
