Flower Crown Craft

Flower Crown Craft Context Statement

In the book Happy Land, flowers are a key symbolic theme representing lineage, identity, and autonomy. Women name their children after their favorite flowers and reclaim their identities through their given names. Flowers are also used to connect generations of Black women, particularly through the character Nikki, whose name is derived from a lavender breed her grandmother loved. This use of floral naming shows how names are tied to ancestry and personal identity.

Reflection Question

Flowers are a powerful theme throughout Happy Land, often highlighting how something so seemingly delicate carries the strength necessary to survive overwhelming opposition and destruction.  What are some ways that flowers serve as representations of resistance and resilience in the novel?

Tools

  • Tacky glue
  • Craft scissors
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Stapler (optional)

Materials

Cardstock paper:

  • 3 sheets of 8.5 x 11-inch paper in various desired shades of green for the leaves
  • 3 sheets of 8.5 x 11-inch paper in various desired colors for the flowers
  • 1 sheet of 8.5 x 11-inch brown paper for the band
  • 1 sheet of 8.5 x 11-inch yellow paper and 1 sheet of white 8.5 x 11-inch paper for the centers of the flowers

Step-by-step instructions:

To make your flower petals

  1. Cut 2-inch vertical strips of colored paper, using your preferred flower colors. Fold each strip in half, and then each half again, equaling four “squares” per strip of paper. Cut each of the 4 squares out vertically along the creases made by folding.
  2. Fold each square in half horizontally, then vertically. You should wind up with a smaller square shape.
  3. Hold the paper on the folded corner. Then cut a semicircle out in a petal shape. After unfolding, you should end up with a 4-petal flower shape.
  4. You can vary the size of the flowers by varying the size of the vertical strips to 1 1/2 inches or 3 inches.
  5. Repeat steps 1 and 2 twice per flower for a total of 20 petal cutouts.

To make your flower centers

  1. Stack one sheet of white and one sheet of yellow card stock. Cut 1-inch vertical strips. Then cut the strips into equal squares vertically for 1-in x 1-in squares.
  2. Keeping the white and yellow squares together, cut each square into a circle.
  3. Make 4 equal cuts toward the center of the circle, leaving around a half inch between the center of the circle and the bottom of the cut. In between each of the 4 cuts, make 4 more vertical cuts towards the center.
  4. Repeat steps until you have 10 white circles and 10 yellow circles.

Assembling your flowers

  1. Use a small dot of tacky glue to assemble the flowers.
    1. From the bottom up, you will glue one of the petal cutouts, then your second petal cutout, then your white circle cutout, and finally your yellow circle cutout.
  2. Apply pressure by squeezing each newly glued layer together. Put these aside to finish drying.

To make your leaves

  1. Cut 3-inch vertical strips, using your preferred leaf colors.
  2. Make additional cuts, ensuring each square is 3-in x 3-in.
  3. Fold your square horizontally. Use your scissors to make a semicircle cut along the opposite side of the spine. After this process, you should have a leaf shape.
  4. You can vary the size of the leaves by varying the size of the strips to 1 or 2 inches.
  5. Continue this process until you have 16 leaves.

To make your headband

  1. Put two sheets of brown paper on top of each other and turn them vertically. Then cut a 1 ½-inch wide vertical strip.
  2. Cut as many strips as needed to wrap around your head when placed end-to-end.
  3. Glue one end of the strip to the end of a different strip, overlapping. Pinch the two glued ends together for 30 seconds to ensure the adhesive sticks.
  4. You could use your stapler to attach the two pieces together instead of the tacky glue.
  5. Only complete one end; do not glue or staple the other ends together yet.
  6. Wait 10 minutes before continuing to make sure the glue has had a chance to dry.

To build your flower crown

  1. Place each of the flowers and leaves where you want them on your flower crown.
  2. Use this time to help shape your flowers by gently moving the petals and centers towards the center of the flower, cupping the top side of the flower towards the palm of your hand.
  3. Make sure the headband looks how you want it before you start gluing.
  4. Glue your leaves down first. Then glue the flowers over them.
  5. It can be helpful to hold your headband up to your face occasionally to ensure you’re not covering your eyes.
  6. After you have glued everything where you want them to be, glue the open ends of your headband strips together, pinching the two glued ends together for 30 seconds to help ensure the adhesive sticks.
  7. You can staple these two ends together to help strengthen the bond.
  8. Wait 30 minutes for the tacky glue to fully set before wearing your flower crown. The glue will cure fully after 24 hours.

Enjoy your flower crown!
