About the Artist
Minnie Evans was a visionary folk artist from the Wilmington area. She grew up in Pender and New Hanover Counties. Evans began drawing spirals and crosses on a grocery list in 1935 after her grandmother’s death. Her work was deeply inspired by her faith, and she believed that her talent was given by God. Evans sold her work to visitors at the Airlie Gardens, where she worked, and gained widespread acclaim before her death in 1987.
